An original WW2 named, cased & researched New York Conspicuous Service Cross. The medal comes in its original case of issue. The medal comes with a slot brooch mechanism indicating production during WW2. The Cross is numbered "1703" and government engraved with "COMDR. L.W. Snell".
Commander Lawrence Wordsworth Snell served in the Secretary of the Navy's office in 1942, then was assistent Chief of Staff in Panama, and later headed the escort maintenance program and commanded an advanced amphibious base in Fowey, Engeland.
In 1944 at Excercise Splint on Pentewan Beach, Cornwall England, Snell devised a unified concept of seaward casualties handling, for which he was recommended for the Legion of Merit. This concept would finally be implemented in evacuating the wounded during D-Day and the Normandy Invasion.
As a citizen of the State of New York Snell recieved his Conspicuous Service Cross on the 20th of June 1946 for his service during WWII and efforts in preperation of the D-Day Invasion.
Snell retired as a Naval Reserve Commander, dying from a heart attack at just 71 years old.
