WW2 WIA Purple Heart Document, 1st Marine Division, Peliliu Airfield 1944

Very nice and interesting WW2 WIA Purple Heart document. The document is named to Corporal Edward J. Clark, member of A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines of the 1st Marine Division. Clark was WIA on the 15th of September 1944 during the fighting in and around the Peliliu Airfield. The Purple Heart award certificate was awarded on the 22nd of April 1963. The award certificate remains in a very good condition as can be seen on the photos. No repairs, no damage.

The service of Clark is as follows:

Clark was born on January 31, 1919, in Primrose, PA. He enlisted in the marines in Philadelphia, PA on January 6, 1942. In the lot is a two page personal account from Clark, in which he describes his service in the action around Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. He also describes one of his friends who was killed by the nighttime Japanese naval bombardment of the airfield, among other events on the island. Additionally, he goes into detailed description of his wound, which was received during the first day of battle during for Peleliu on September 15, 1944. While trying to capture the airfield, he was nearly run over by Japanese tanks, one of which knocked debris into Clark, crushing his legs. This wound is confirmed on his casualty card. After the war, Clark worked for the veterans administration, and received a citation for a useful recommendation (see other original paperwork included in the group).Clark passed away on June 5, 1998.
